From 3260 SEK / person / nightAngaga at 1,761 SEK, Baros at 6,372 SEK
Angaga Island Resort & Spa is the cheapest way in at 1,761 SEK per person per night, with 90 rooms split between beach bungalows and water villas. The top of the range is Baros Maldives at 6,372 SEK, where 75 villas share three restaurants.
Between those two ends the prices step rather than jump, and each step buys something different. OUTRIGGER Maldives Maafushivaru offers 81 villas at 2,835 SEK, and Kandolhu's 3,260 SEK buys a 30-villa island. At 4,592 SEK, Conrad Maldives Rangali Island spreads 151 villas across two islands joined by a footbridge, with OZEN LIFE MAADHOO just below Baros at 6,052 SEK.
Thirty villas against 151 on two islands
Island size decides how much of the day goes on walking and how much on the water. Kandolhu is the smallest at 30 villas, which is why it reads as a quiet island rather than a resort with a programme. Angaga's 90 rooms keep it in the same bracket: no room is far from the water.
Conrad Maldives Rangali Island goes the other way, with 151 villas across two islands linked by a footbridge. That buys an undersea restaurant and a long list of places to eat, and it costs you the crossing between them. OUTRIGGER Maldives Maafushivaru, at 81 villas, sits between the two scales.
All-inclusive at OZEN, extras at Baros
Two resorts near the top of the price range bill in opposite ways, and the headline rate tells you little until you read the inclusions. OZEN LIFE MAADHOO's 6,052 SEK is an ultra-all-inclusive rate: the Atmosphere Indulgence plan covers dining, premium spirits, spa treatments and excursions, and the transfer is included.
Baros Maldives charges 6,372 SEK and includes breakfast. Boat transfers cost extra, local government taxes are added on top, and mandatory gala dinners apply on special event dates. The ban on children under 7 settles the choice immediately for families with young children.
Getting there, and what the last leg costs
International flights land at Velana International Airport, and direct services run from a number of major airports, so arrival is usually one flight and then a boat. Public ferries operated by the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company link Malé with local islands at roughly 25 to 100 rufiyaa per person per journey, which is the cheap way to move around the atolls if you are not staying on a resort island.
The last leg to a resort is billed differently from one property to the next, and it is the line most people miss when comparing rates. Baros Maldives charges for boat transfers on top of its 6,372 SEK per person per night; OZEN LIFE MAADHOO includes the transfer in its 6,052 SEK. Ask which applies before you commit.
When the sea is calm: November to April
The northeast monsoon runs from November to April and brings the settled, sunny weather the Maldives is known for, with January to March the driest stretch of the year. The southwest monsoon takes over from May to October and brings the rain.
For snorkeling and boat trips, aim at the calm months. In the wet season trips still run, but surface chop makes long boat rides less comfortable and stirs up the lagoon, which is the difference between a clear reef and a cloudy one.
Bring your own mask, and a dry bag for the boat
A mask that does not seal will end a snorkeling session early, and rental masks are fitted to nobody in particular. The cheapest fix is your own. The SEAC Cyklop Marina fits children from about 3 to 8 years at 259 SEK and the Mares Cyklop Sharky covers 4 to 7 year olds at 299 SEK. For adults, the SEAC X-Frame is 549 SEK and the Mares X-Vision Mid 2.0 fits narrower faces at 749 SEK.
Full kits take the guesswork out of matching parts. The cheapest three-piece set is the Mares X-One with the Pirate mask, sized for 8 to 14 year olds, at 849 SEK. Adult sets start at 1,549 SEK, and the top of the range, the X-One with the X-Vision Ultra and Ergo Dry snorkel, is 1,779 SEK. A 20-litre SEAC dry bag at 259 SEK and a 40-litre dry backpack at 449 SEK keep clothes dry on the crossing.
Frequently asked questions
- What activities are available at Sportextreme Maldives?
- Sportextreme's Maldives offering is resort stays plus snorkeling gear. The islands include Angaga Island Resort & Spa, Kandolhu, OUTRIGGER Maldives Maafushivaru, Conrad Maldives Rangali Island, OZEN LIFE MAADHOO and Baros Maldives, and the equipment covers masks, snorkels, fins and dry bags from Mares and SEAC.
- Is Sportextreme Maldives expensive?
- The nightly rates are the expensive part: 1,761 SEK per person per night at Angaga Island Resort & Spa at the bottom, up to 6,372 SEK at Baros Maldives. The gear is cheap by comparison, starting at 35 SEK for a snorkel keeper and 179 SEK for anti-fog gel, with mask and snorkel sets from 479 SEK.
- What is the best water sport to try in the Maldives?
- Snorkeling, because it needs the least equipment and Sportextreme's Maldives gear is all built for it: a mask, snorkel and fins. Full sets run from 849 SEK for the junior Mares X-One with the Pirate mask to 1,779 SEK for the X-One with the X-Vision Ultra and Ergo Dry snorkel.
- What is the best month for water sports in the Maldives?
- November to April, when the northeast monsoon brings settled, sunny weather, with January to March the driest stretch. Conditions turn from May, when the southwest monsoon arrives with rain and stronger winds.
- Is the Maldives good for water sports in July?
- July sits in the wetter half of the year, so expect rain, wind and choppier water. Trips still run, but long boat rides are less comfortable and the lagoon is stirred up.
- What should I wear for water sports in the Maldives?
- Swimwear, plus your own mask and snorkel if you want a seal you can rely on. A dry bag keeps clothes and a phone dry on the boat: the SEAC 20-litre dry bag is 259 SEK and the SEAC waterproof phone case is 199 SEK.
