Sweden History Tours: Stockholm Tours Compared

Stockholm on foot, or a day out of the city

Every tour the company runs is one of two shapes: a walk inside Stockholm, or a day in a vehicle heading somewhere older. The city walks cover Gamla Stan, Östermalm, Södermalm, Djurgården, Skeppsholmen and Norrmalm, and they run from one hour to five. The day trips go to Uppsala, Sigtuna, Vallentuna and Enköping, where the Viking and medieval material actually sits.

Stockholm has more than 100 museums, castles and attractions, so a city walk never runs short of material. The burial mounds, runestones and 12th-century churches that give Swedish history its weight are outside the city, though, which is why the trips that leave it cost more and take the whole day.

The one-hour walks are the cheapest way in

The short tours are all walking, and they are where the prices start. A one-hour walk through Uppsala's forgotten houses is 250 SEK, and the Stockholm dark-history walks, the ones covering witch trials and the 1520 bloodbath, are 302.10 SEK for an hour. For a first visit on a tight schedule, the 1.5-hour overviews at 397.50 SEK take in the Old Town or the Uppsala cathedral from the outside without eating your day.

An hour buys one theme and a few streets. If you want the Vasa Museum, the Royal Palace and Djurgården in a single outing, that is a three-hour tour and the price climbs with it, from 1,749 SEK for the public three-hour city walk.

What a day trip out of Stockholm costs you

The transported day trips start at 2,597 SEK for the small-group ancient history tour to Markim-Orkesta and rise quickly from there. The eight-hour journeys to Enköping, Sigtuna and Uppsala run between 2,850 and 4,229.40 SEK, and the private seven-hour day tour to Uppsala is the most expensive tour the company lists at 6,338.80 SEK.

The money is not the only cost. A full-day tour takes the whole day, and the ones that include hotel pick-up and drop-off in Stockholm remove the transfer problem but not the clock. Ask what time you get back before you plan anything for the evening.

Private or public: per group, not per person

Private tours are quoted for the group, so the headline figure is not what each of you pays. The three-hour Old Town, ferry and Vasa Museum tour is 6,000 SEK for up to five guests, and the Arlanda transfer with Viking sites and a farm fika stop is 3,500 SEK per group. Split across a family, those work out differently from a walk you buy a seat on.

Public tours run on set days instead. The three-hour Viking History Tour departs Mondays and Thursdays, the five-hour on Tuesdays and Saturdays, and the Viking History Tours start at 1,150 SEK.

Food tours cost more than the history walks

Eating your way through the Old Town is the priciest way to spend three hours. The mead and food tour is 1,537 SEK and the three-course walking dinner is 1,590 SEK. The cheaper route to the same combination is the two-hour Old Town walk with a one-course dinner in a medieval cellar at 850 SEK.

Fika turns up inside history tours too, so you do not have to book a food tour to eat. The private deluxe Old Town walk at 2,321.40 SEK includes coffee and pastry, Vasa Museum entry and the ferry to Djurgården, while the Uppsala food walk at 950 SEK runs through the city's cafés from the cathedral.

Booking, meeting points and what to check first

Most tours book online with free cancellation up to 24 hours ahead and payment taken later. The slow-tourism range, the pilgrimage, bike and nature walks, is the exception: those are arranged by email or through the request form rather than instant booking.

Before you pay, check where the tour starts, whether entry fees are in the price, and how much of it is on foot. Some private tours meet at your central Stockholm hotel if it is within 2km of the Old Town, while others have a fixed meeting point, such as the statue outside Gamla stan metro for the Old Town food tour. If anyone in your group has trouble with stairs or uneven ground, ask about the route, because the Old Town walks and the cellar dinners are the ones to check.

Preguntas frecuentes

How much do Sweden History Tours cost in Stockholm?

The cheapest tour is 250 SEK for a one-hour walk through Uppsala's forgotten houses, and the most expensive is the private seven-hour Uppsala day tour at 6,338.80 SEK. Most Stockholm city walks sit between 260 SEK and 1,750 SEK.

Is Sweden History Tours worth it?

It is worth it if you want to leave the city. The day trips reach Anundshög's burial mounds, 3,000-year-old petroglyphs and 12th-century churches, and none of those are inside Stockholm. If Gamla Stan is the whole plan, a self-guided walk covers the same streets.

What tours does Sweden History Tours offer?

The company runs walking tours in Stockholm and Uppsala and transported day trips to Viking and medieval sites outside the city. In Stockholm that means Old Town, Östermalm, Södermalm, Djurgården and Skeppsholmen walks, plus ghost walks, food tours, museum tours and private custom itineraries.

Are Sweden History Tours private or group tours?

Both, and the pricing tells you which one you are buying. Public walks such as the one-hour dark-history tours are priced from 302.10 SEK, while private tours are quoted per group, like the three-hour Old Town, ferry and Vasa Museum tour at 6,000 SEK for up to five guests.

How long are the Sweden History Tours?

They run from one hour to thirteen. The shortest are the one-hour city and ghost walks, the middle ground is the three-to-five-hour city tours, and the longest are the eight-hour day trips to Enköping, Sigtuna and Uppsala, with the Åland Islands tour taking thirteen hours including the ferry crossings.

Does Sweden History Tours pick you up from your hotel?

On the transported day trips, yes. The Enköping petroglyph tour, the Sigtuna and Uppsala full-day tour and the country food and farm tour all include hotel pick-up in Stockholm, and some private walks meet at your hotel if it is within 2km of the Old Town. City walking tours usually start at a fixed meeting point instead.

Can I book Sweden History Tours online?

Most tours book online, with free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure and payment taken later. The slow-tourism range, which covers the pilgrimage, bike and nature walks, is arranged by email or the request form rather than instant booking.

What is the best historical tour in Stockholm?

For the widest single outing, the four-hour small-group city tour at 1,750 SEK covers the Vasa Museum, the Royal Palace and the Old Town with transport between them. For depth rather than breadth, the two-hour naval history walk at Djurgården is 260 SEK and covers a former military shipyard most visitors walk straight past.

Do Sweden History Tours include lunch or fika?

Some do. The three-hour Old Town food tour includes eight tastings and mead, the walking dinner includes a three-course meal in a medieval cellar, and the private deluxe Old Town walk includes coffee and pastry with Vasa Museum entry. The plain history walks include no food.
