Adventure Norway runs everything from one riverside base at Hesså, 3 km south of Bjelland, and rafting on the Mandalselva is the headline. Day activities cost between 325 NOK for a canoe and 900 NOK for a half-day course, and the 24-hour wilderness camp is 1,500 NOK per person.

About This Experience Adventure Norway offers climbing courses for those who want to learn how to climb. You do not need to have any prior knowledge for this — they teach you everything you need to know.
Adult NOK 900; under 16 NOK 800Everything runs from one riverside base
Every activity leaves from the same place: the Adventure Norway base at Hesså, on the bank of the Mandalselva, 3 km south of Bjelland centre. That matters because of what it saves you in time. You are not driving between operators, the rafting centre is a walk from the cabins, and the sauna, guest kitchen and fire pits sit on the same site.
The programme splits three ways. Water is the main event, with rafting, canoeing and a kayak course all using the same stretch of the Mandalselva. Height is the second, from a via ferrata route to a natural climbing wall with a 30-metre rappel overhang. The third is slower and cheaper: an evening elk safari, salmon fishing, bushcraft, and riverside trails you can walk for nothing.
Four ways onto the Mandalselva, and who each suits
Rafting on the Mandal River is the standard trip: 6 km of grade 2/3 water, roughly three hours including the minibus transfer to the put-in, and 700 NOK per adult with under-16s at 600 NOK. Wetsuits, jackets, life jackets and helmets come with it, and the river is gentle enough that children from the age of six can join.
Mamba rafting is the same stretch for adults only, at 600 NOK per person. You steer your own raft down the 6 km while guides follow in a kayak or another raft. It runs May to September, leaves at 11:00 and 14:00, and takes between two and six people. Canoeing is the cheapest paid activity at 325 NOK per adult and 275 NOK for under-16s, and the calmest of the water trips: a canoe, paddles and safety equipment, a briefing, and 6 km to cover at your own pace, guided or not. The kayak course is the opposite proposition: 900 NOK per adult and 800 NOK under 16 for half a day, minimum two people, spent learning to handle the boat rather than being carried down the river. It starts in calm water at the rafting centre before moving onto 5 km of grade 2/3 river.
Via ferrata, climbing and paintball: how much is asked of you
Via ferrata is the headline on the vertical side: a protected route with fixed cables, rungs and iron steps that needs no climbing experience, guided by IRF-certified staff at 600 NOK per adult and 500 NOK for under-16s, with harness, helmet and lanyard included.
Climbing and rappelling is a three-hour session at 595 NOK, or 495 NOK for children, and it is open to children from the age of five. The wall has top-rope routes at several difficulty levels, and the rappel is the part that asks the most of you: a 30-metre overhang with a 10-metre free drop at the end. If you would rather learn the skill than be taken up, the four-hour climbing course is 900 NOK, or 800 NOK under 16, all equipment provided and no prior knowledge assumed. Paintball sits apart from all of it, at 625 NOK per adult and a minimum age of 13, minimum eight players, two hours on an arena the size of a football pitch in the woods near the rafting centre, with 200 shots in the magazine and extra bags of paintballs at 250 NOK.
Elk safari, salmon and the walking that costs nothing
The elk safari is the only activity with a set weekly slot: Tuesdays and Thursdays from July to September, meeting at 22:00 for about two hours and 30 km by minibus. It costs 525 NOK per person and the operator puts the success rate at 95%. July and August are the months to aim for. Bring binoculars and a camera, since you are watching wild animals from a vehicle rather than walking up to them.
Salmon fishing on the Mandalselva runs from 1 June to 15 September, and Adventure Norway arranges the permit and tells you where to cast, with guiding recommended on request. The walking is free outright: a riverside trail that was the main road to Kristiansand over a century ago, two burial mounds from the Migration Period still visible beside it, and a climb up to the Steinsheiknuten viewpoint with a picnic spot at the top. Ask at reception how to find the mounds.
Bushcraft: an afternoon in the forest, or a night in it
Bushcraft is the part of the programme with nothing to do with water or height. The introductory course runs two to three hours and costs 500 NOK per person, 400 NOK for under-16s: safe knife handling, making fire from dry material, and building a shelter in the forest. It is built for beginners and families, and you need no gear of your own.
The 24-hour wilderness camp is the same skills plus a night outside, at 1,500 NOK per person. You sleep in hammocks or on beds you have improvised inside the shelters you built, then make breakfast over the fire when the forest wakes up. It is also the one activity the operator runs in winter, apart from paintball arena rental for experienced groups, which makes it the answer for anyone visiting outside the summer months.
Getting there takes planning, and the season is short
Public transport reaches this part of southern Norway in pieces. There is no direct connection from Kristiansand to the village, and the workable rail version is a train to Audnedal stasjon followed by a taxi for the rest. Express buses do run daily to Lindesnes from Oslo, Kristiansand and Stavanger, but nothing runs to Bjelland in summer, so plan on a car.
By road the base is 55 minutes from Kristiansand, 40 minutes from Mandal, 3 hours 15 minutes from Stavanger and about 4.5 hours from Oslo on the E18, with parking and turning space for coaches on site. What that distance really decides is your dates: Mamba rafting runs May to September, the elk safari only from July to September, salmon fishing from 1 June to 15 September, and most of the rest is summer only. If one activity is the reason for the trip, check its dates before you book the travel around it.
