Häxberget

Häxberget is a stark execution site in Torsåker parish near Bollstabruk, where on June 1, 1675, mayor Erik Lund from Härnösand oversaw the beheading and burning of 71 people—65 women, six men—during Sweden's largest witch trials, claiming every fifth woman in the parish. A memorial stone now stands atop the mountain, reached via the 7.5 km Häxstigen trail from Torsåkers church or a quick 400-meter uphill walk from parking at the base near Hållsätter 172 in Kramfors municipality. The spot overlooks serene forests in Västernorrland county, with the grim history marked by blood-soaked slopes designed to feed the pyres efficiently. It's open around the clock with free parking, though the museum on witch trials at Hola folkhögskola in Prästmon since 2017 fills in more details if you drive there first. Summer draws crowds along Route 87 from Sundsvall, about 50 km south.
