Stortorget Malmö
Stortorget is Malmö’s oldest and largest public square, originally established as a marketplace in the early 15th century and built on its current site by Jörgen Kock, the German-born mayor of the then-Danish city. In the center stands a prominent statue of King Karl X Gustav of Sweden, who reclaimed Malmö from Danish control in the 17th century. The square is located just 500 meters from Malmö Central Station, bordered on the east by the ornate Malmö City Hall (constructed between 1544 and 1547) and in the northwest by Kockska Huset, Jörgen Kock’s historic residence. It is notable for its 17th–18th century merchant houses, a unique fountain, and its transformation into a skating rink during winter months. No admission is required, and it serves as a central gathering spot for festivals, with numerous cafés and restaurants lining its edges, making it ideal for visiting anytime during the day.
