Aster is a contemporary, fire-focused restaurant at Jagaregatan 6 in Varvsstaden, Malmö’s former Kockums shipyard district, housed partly in a 1917 building once used as a warehouse and fire station beneath the old Kockums cranes. It opened in summer 2021 as the first restaurant in Varvsstaden, founded and run by chef Şahin Erdal, bartender Linus Montán Elveroth, and artist and CEO Mimmi Montán Elveroth, with Ola Rudin and Sebastian Persson of Saltimporten involved as advisers and financiers. Erdal’s menu draws on Turkish, Japanese, and Italian influences, with a strong emphasis on vegetables, wood-fired cooking, grilling, and changing small plates rather than a fixed national cuisine. The open kitchen contains both a wood-fired oven and live-fire grill, while the dining room uses furniture from Kockums’ former staff cafeteria and includes a cocktail bar. Aster generally serves dinner Tuesday through Thursday from 5 to 11 pm, Friday from 4 pm to midnight, and Saturday from 11:30 am to midnight; reservations are advisable, especially for Friday and Saturday evenings.
