Häradskär

Häradskär, southeast of Valdemarsvik, is an old fishing village and pilot harbor, located in the outer archipelago of Gryt, 11 kilometers southeast of Gryt.

Häradskär Lighthouse shines for 24 nautical miles. Since the 1600s, there was a sea marker at the site in the form of a pole with a barrel on top. In 1741, the pole was replaced by a red-painted beacon, which was demolished when the current lighthouse, built of iron and designed by Gustav von Heidenstam, was erected in 1863. Häradskär Lighthouse is the second oldest iron lighthouse in Sweden. The lighthouse guides vessels into a shipping lane that has been used since the 13th century.

The Östergötland Ornithological Society conducts bird research, including bird ringing and migration counting, on the island during the autumn.

In the summer, there are trips to the island on Thursdays, operated by Skärgårdskompaniet, departing from Fyrudden.
