Postmuseum

Postmuseum at Lilla Nygatan 6 in Gamla stan houses Sweden's sole museum on postal history and stamp collecting, covering everything from the postal service's founding in 1636 to today. The building, the oldest in the Swedish postal organization, was bought by the Post Office in 1720 and rebuilt in the 1820s by architect Fredrik Blom; it served as Stockholm's only post office until 1869 and has been fully dedicated to the museum since 1939, with the public opening in 1906 under PostNord ownership. After major renovations, it reopened on October 19, 2024, featuring the main exhibition on nearly 400 years of postal journeys, the kid-friendly play area Postis, the treasure-filled Skattkammaren, and the AVI restaurant. Its collection includes posthistorical artifacts, photos, documents, and one of the world's largest stamp holdings, plus a shop stocked with Sweden's biggest selection of stamps and souvenirs like quill pens. Free entry applies to all under 18; on Mondays in May 2026 it's open 11:00-17:00, reachable by a two-minute walk from Gamla stan metro or bus 3 at Mälartorget, with parking on Riddarholmen. Note it's closed on May 14 and hosts a Post Work evening with free entry on May 28 from 17:00-20:00, including a talk by designer Maja Ringsäter at 18:00.
