Torsåkers kyrka, Ångermanland
Torsåkers kyrka at Kyrkvägen 20 in Nyland is a medieval stone church from the early 1200s, starting as a simple longhouse with a lower, rectangular chancel in Romanesque style, extended westward and fitted with two brick star vaults in the 1400s, when unknown artists added wall and ceiling paintings inspired by Biblia Pauperum and Gothic plant motifs. It's likely dedicated to Saint Olof and sits near one of Västernorrland's three ancient royal estates, on ground possibly seen as sacred by pre-Christian locals from the name's roots in Tor and åker. The church holds a 1553 printed missal, Een liten Songbook til at bruka i kyrkionne, with Latin and Swedish prayers plus handwritten notes like the added Latin creed, and medieval items including a late-1200s Madonna sculpture mentioned in 1316 during Archbishop Olof Björnsson's visit. Its darkest chapter unfolded on June 1, 1675, when priest Laurentsius Christophori Hornaeus gave last communion to 71 accused witches—mostly women, making up one in five adult females here—before their execution at Häxberget. Christian graves from around 1000 at nearby Björned suggest an earlier farm church, abandoned by late 1200s for this socken hub in Ångermanland's Ådalen valley. Check the Svenska kyrkan site for summer service times, as it's still active in Härnösands stift.
