Malmö Stadsteater

Malmö Stadsteater is Malmö’s main city theatre, with its large stage, Hippodromen, housed in a former circus building on Kalendegatan 12 in the Gamla Staden district. The building dates to 1899, and the theatre occupies a site that has also served as a theatre and even a Pentecostal church before being rebuilt for stage use again. It is known for its permanent acting ensemble and for playing on three main stages: Hippodromen, Intiman, and Studion, plus participant-based activities in the Atelier. The most distinctive feature is the old circus hall itself, which gives the theatre a very specific historic atmosphere in the center of Malmö, a short walk from the old town streets around the city core. For practical planning, the theatre’s performances are concentrated at its Kalendegatan address, and the main stage is the one to check if you want the biggest productions.
