Royal Dramatic Theatre

The Royal Dramatic Theatre, or Dramaten, is Sweden’s national stage for spoken drama, founded in 1788 under King Gustav III and housed since 1908 in its Jugend-style building at Nybroplan. Architect Fredrik Lilljekvist designed the building, which opened on February 18, 1908, with August Strindberg’s play Mäster Olof. Its marble-and-gilded interiors, sculptural ornament, and murals by Carl Larsson make it one of Stockholm’s most distinctive theatrical buildings, while its stages continue to present Swedish and international drama. The theatre stands at Nybroplan, near Berzelii Park and the waterfront, at Nybroplan, 111 47 Stockholm; the nearest metro station is Östermalmstorg. The box office opens two hours before weekday performances, Saturdays from 11:00 to 19:00, and Sundays from 14:00 to 16:00, and popular productions should be booked in advance.
