Thielska Galleriet
Thielska Galleriet is an art museum in Ernest Thiel’s former villa at Sjötullsbacken 8, Blockhusudden, on Djurgården in Stockholm. Designed by architect Ferdinand Boberg for banker and art patron Ernest Thiel and his wife Signe Maria Thiel, the white Art Nouveau building was completed in 1907 and served as their home until 1924; the collection became a state foundation in 1924 and opened to the public in 1925. Its holdings focus on Nordic art from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, including works by Edvard Munch, Bruno Liljefors, Anders Zorn, Carl Larsson, Eugène Jansson, August Strindberg, Paul Gauguin, and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, with the largest collection of Munch’s art outside Norway. The villa remains largely unchanged, and its walled grounds give it a secluded setting beside the waters of Stockholm’s inner archipelago. It is open Tuesday to Sunday from noon to 5 p.m.; from May through October, Thursdays extend to 8 p.m., while Mondays are closed.
