Torsåkers parish

Torsåkers församling is a historic parish in Kramfors Municipality, Västernorrland County, centered around Torsåkers kyrka, a medieval stone church built around 1200 with an original Romanesque design that saw its choir expanded and nave extended westward in the 15th century. The church stands in the village of Torsåker at 873 93 Nyland, about 10 kilometers south of Kramfors along Route 335 near the Ångermanälven River. In 1675, the parish became infamous for the Torsåker witch trials, where bailiff Per Matsson Grawen prosecuted 71 people—mostly women and children—leading to their beheading and burning on a single day, July 1, at the site now marked by a memorial stone. The interior holds a 13th-century crucifix, wooden sculptures from the 1500s, and a pulpit carved in 1764 by Jonas Westerberg. It's open daily from 9 AM to 6 PM in summer, with guided tours on Sundays at 2 PM from June through August; park along the gravel lot by the churchyard and walk the path to the witch trial pyre mound for the full story.
