Kulturhuset Stadsteatern

Kulturhuset Stadsteatern is Stockholm’s multidisciplinary cultural centre and city theatre at Sergels torg, directly opposite the Kulturhuset entrance to T-Centralen and beside the glass obelisk known as Kristallvertikalaccent. Designed by modernist architect Peter Celsing after a 1965 competition, the theatre section opened in 1971 and the complete building was inaugurated in October 1974; the theatre and cultural centre merged under the present name in 2013. Its broad glass façade exposes a changing programme of theatre, dance, concerts, exhibitions, film, libraries, talks and children’s activities, while the building’s concrete-and-glass design became one of Celsing’s defining works in Stockholm. The western section temporarily housed Sweden’s Riksdag from 1971 until 1983, and Stadsteatern’s main theatre auditorium moved into the building in 1990. Opening hours differ between the galleries, libraries, ticket office and performance venues, with holiday variations, so check the official daily schedule before arriving; theatre performances generally require advance tickets, while many exhibitions and public areas can be entered without reservation.
