Optimistorkestern

Optimistorkestern is a bronze sculpture group depicting a five-member marching band with a tambourmajor, located on Södergatan at the corner of Stortorget in Malmö. It was created in 1985 by the artist Yngve Lundell (1931–2015) after he won the municipal competition to decorate Malmö’s first pedestrian street. The ensemble features four musicians playing instruments and a conductor leading them, symbolizing optimism and urban joy. Situated in the heart of Malmö’s busiest walking street, it is one of the city’s most photographed public artworks and a beloved spot for locals and visitors to pause and take pictures. The sculpture is outdoors and accessible 24/7, with no admission fee, and daytime visits offer the clearest view and best atmosphere.
