Parliament House

Parliament House, known in Swedish as Riksdagshuset, is the seat of Sweden’s national legislature, the Riksdag, where 349 elected members debate and vote on laws. Built between 1897 and 1905 in a blend of neo-Baroque and Art Nouveau styles, the monumental structure was designed by architect Aron Johansson and constructed using Swedish granite and limestone. It occupies nearly half of Helgeandsholmen island in central Stockholm’s Gamla stan district, just across the Norrström river from the city center, with its main entrance at Riksgatan 1. The building is notable for its grand debating chamber with a semicircular layout, ornate 19th-century ceremonial rooms, and a curated collection of contemporary art that reflects Sweden’s democratic values. Free guided tours in English and Swedish run year-round—several times daily Monday through Friday in summer, and once daily on weekends in winter—but must be booked in advance through the official website, and visitors must bring photo ID for security checks. The best time to visit is during parliamentary sessions from September to June, when you may observe live debates, though tour availability is more limited then compared to the summer recess period.
