The Market Hall

The Market Hall, officially Stora Saluhallen, is Gothenburg’s historic indoor food market on the north side of Kungstorget in the city centre, near Kungsportsplatsen and the Stora Teatern. The building was commissioned after a city council decision on 16 June 1887, constructed in 1888–1889 by A. Krüger, and designed by architect Hans Hedlund at the initiative of newspaper editor S. A. Hedlund. Its stone, iron, and glass structure was described at the time as Sweden’s first large building made exclusively from those materials, and the hall remains known for its broad glazed roof and dense concentration of food stalls, delis, cafés, and restaurants. Regular hours are Monday to Wednesday 10:00–18:00, Thursday and Friday 10:00–19:00, Saturday 10:00–17:00, and Sunday closed; weekday lunchtime is busiest, while Saturday morning is better for browsing the counters.
