Bio Skandia
Bio Skandia is a historic single-screen cinema at Drottninggatan 82 in Stockholm’s Norrmalm district, postal code 111 36. It opened on 19 September 1923 as Skandia-Teatern, commissioned by film producer Charles Magnusson and designed primarily by architect Gunnar Asplund, with earlier work by Ragnar Hjorth and assistance from Uno Åhrén and Kjell Westin. The auditorium was conceived as an atmospheric cinema resembling an open-air courtyard, with Swedish Grace interiors, a star-patterned ceiling and lighting that originally faded lamp by lamp before the film; its former theatre organ was installed in 1926. After restoration led by Mats Kullander in the late 1980s, the venue regained the name Skandia in 1991, and since 2023 it has been wholly owned by the Stockholm International Film Festival. Doors generally open one hour before screenings, with regular operating hours Thursday through Sunday from 15:00 to 22:00.
