Ájtte ("The Sami Storage Hut")

Ájtte, whose name means “storage hut” in Sami, is Sweden’s national museum of Sami culture and a specialist museum for the mountain region’s natural and cultural history, at Kyrkogatan 3 in central Jokkmokk, just north of the Arctic Circle. The museum opened in June 1989, expanding a smaller Jokkmokk museum founded in 1965; it is operated by a foundation established in 1983 by the Swedish government, Norrbotten Region, Jokkmokk Municipality, Svenska Samernas Riksförbund, and Same Ätnam. Its exhibitions cover Sami history, reindeer herding, traditional clothing and handicrafts, language, sacred objects, and the ecology of the Swedish mountain world, while the museum also maintains important Sami archives and collections. For practical planning, it generally opens Tuesday to Friday from 10:00 to 16:00 and Saturdays from 12:00 to 16:00 outside the summer season, with daily opening from 10:00 to 17:00 in mid-June through mid-August; hours change seasonally, so check before travelling.
