Arctic Stories

Arctic Stories is a Sámi cultural experience in central Jokkmokk, where Juhán Niila Stålka presents joik and storytelling inside a lávvu at Wästfeltsgatan 39, about 10 minutes on foot from the bus station and 15 minutes from Hotel Akerlund, Inlandsbanan, and Hotel Jokkmokk. The approximately 90-minute program combines traditional Sámi vocal technique with stories about animals, mountains, and people from Jåhkåmåhkke, the Sámi name for Jokkmokk, accompanied by coffee and dried reindeer meat. Stålka learned joik from his father during journeys north and draws on memories of visiting his grandparents near Stuor Muorkke, or Stora Sjöfallet. Performances run throughout the year, usually in the afternoon or evening, with scheduled sessions commonly at 18:00; the experience costs 950 SEK per person and must be booked in advance, normally by 16:00 on the same day.
