Kometen

Kometen is a classic Swedish restaurant at Vasagatan 58 in Gothenburg, right in the Lorensberg 45:7 building, serving European and Scandinavian dishes like wiener schnitzel, torskrygg, pepparstek, raw beef, and chanterelle toast, with vegetarian and gluten-free options. The space started as the kitchen and dining hall in a 1931 collective housing project, then opened to the public in 1938 after adding a street entrance; Austrian musician Hans Breitneder launched it around 1934 as a meal delivery service for kitchenless residents before going public. It stayed family-run until 2009, switched to star restaurateurs, and got new owners in 2017 while keeping its old-world setup with white tablecloths, serving platters, and a ballroom for groups. They do lunch and dinner daily, open Monday to Thursday 11:30 to 22:00, Friday to 23:00, Saturday from noon to 23:00, and Sunday 13:00 to 20:00, so call 031-13 79 88 ahead for reservations especially on busy Friday nights. Lunch includes salad, fresh bread, and house-made cakes at a good price. The menu sticks to rustic husmanskost with an extensive wine list and full bar.
