Museifartygen Sankt Erik & Finngrundet

Museifartygen Sankt Erik & Finngrundet is a floating maritime museum consisting of two historic vessels moored at the Fartygspir pier on Galärvarvsvägen 24, just below the Vasa Museum on Djurgården. The icebreaker Sankt Erik was built at Finnboda Varf in 1915 as Stockholm’s first sea icebreaker to keep archipelago routes open, while the lightship Finngrundet was constructed in Gävle in 1903 to mark anchorages in the southern Bothnian Sea. Both ships are operated by Sjöhistoriska Museet (the National Maritime Museum), with Sankt Erik becoming a museum ship in 1980 after being decommissioned in 1977, and Finngrundet joining the collection in 1970 after ending service in 1969. During the summer season from late May to mid-September, the site is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, with museum guides offering onboard tours and answering questions throughout the day. Visitors can step inside both vessels to see original engines, navigation equipment, and crew quarters, though access is limited for wheelchairs and strollers due to the ships’ narrow passages and steep stairs.
