Kvarnen

Kvarnen is a traditional Swedish restaurant and bar at Tjärhovsgatan 4 on Södermalm, one block from Medborgarplatsen, serving home-style dishes such as hand-rolled meatballs, pickled herring, veal liver, seasonal food, beer, and snaps. Construction of the building began in 1906, it was completed in 1907, and the restaurant opened in 1908 as one of Stockholm’s utskänkningsaktiebolag taverns. It was originally called Grå Kvarn, after a historic mill known as Borgmästarkvarnen that stood nearby from the seventeenth century until 1863; the restaurant adopted the shorter name Kvarnen in 1960. The large dining hall, long association with Södermalm’s working-class social life, and late-night atmosphere are central to its identity. Opening hours are Monday and Tuesday 11:00–23:00, Wednesday and Thursday 11:00–00:00, Friday 11:00–03:00, Saturday 11:30–03:00, and Sunday 11:30–23:00; outdoor seating runs daily from 11:00 to 00:00, and reservations can be made by phone or email.
