Vendels kyrka
Vendel's church - a St. Mary's church with unique frescoes and an interesting prehistory.
In Vendel's ancient cultural area, a historic and unusually beautiful church site has been preserved for posterity, with a medieval church from the 14th century and burial grounds from the first millennium of our era.
The church probably began to be built in the latter half of the 13th century and consisted of a nave and a narrower chancel and a sacristy, which still exists. According to legend, the completed church was consecrated in 1310. At that time, it was equipped with wooden barrel vaults inside. During the 14th century, a porch was built, and during the same century painting decorations were added, fragments of which remain in a niche between the chancel and the pulpit and on the walls of the porch.
Around 1450, the church was vaulted with brick vaults, which in 1451 were provided with paintings by the prominent Uppland artist Johannes Iwan.
In 1930, the church was restored and some of the whitewashed paintings were brought out. During the first decade of the 21st century, all the church walls were cleaned so that the medieval paintings came into better light.
Adjacent to the church is the Vendel Museum, which is run by the Vendel Local History Association. From there, a church path, approximately 1 km long, starts with information signs about the church's prehistory and surroundings.
