Millesgården

Millesgården is an art museum, sculpture park, former home, and studio complex on Herserudsvägen 32, high above Värtan on Lidingö island near Stockholm. Sculptor Carl Milles and painter Olga Milles bought the site in 1907; architect Carl M. Bengtsson completed their home in 1908, while Carl’s half-brother Evert Milles helped shape the terraces, studios, and gardens during later expansions. The grounds display Carl Milles’s monumental sculptures among terraces, fountains, columns, and Mediterranean-inspired landscaping, alongside the artist home, the Small Studio, an art gallery, and the Woodland Chapel where Carl and Olga are buried. The couple established Millesgården as a foundation and gave it to the Swedish people in 1936, making the site both a museum and a preserved artistic environment overlooking Lake Värtan. It is open Tuesday through Sunday from 11:00 to 17:00 and closed on Mondays; late spring and summer offer the clearest conditions for seeing the sculpture terraces and water views.
