Tyresta National Park and Nature Reserve
Tyresta National Park and the surrounding nature reserve form a protected forest landscape in Haninge and Tyresö municipalities, about 20 kilometres southeast of central Stockholm; the national park was inaugurated on 13 September 1993, while the larger Tyresta–Åva nature reserve was established in 1986. The main entrance is Tyresta village, a traditional farmstead with buildings dating from the eighteenth century, where Naturum Nationalparkernas hus presents exhibitions about Sweden’s national parks, Tyresta’s ecology, and local fire history. The park protects ancient pine and spruce forest, rocky rift valleys, lakes, wetlands, and trees that can be several centuries old. A 1999 wildfire burned approximately 450 hectares, and the designated fire-damaged area now shows natural regeneration, standing dead pines, young birch and aspen, and abundant fungi; it takes about 45 minutes to reach on the Bylsjöslingan loop from the village. The trails and outdoor areas are open year-round, while Naturum generally opens from 10:00 to 16:00, with seasonal variations and additional summer hours; check the current schedule before travelling.
