Restaurant Pelikan

Restaurant Pelikan is a classic Swedish husmanskost restaurant at Blekingegatan 40 in Södermalm, Stockholm, serving dishes such as meatballs, herring, veal liver, pork leg with root mash, and traditional desserts. The current premises date from 1904 and retain an Art Nouveau interior with a painted ceiling, high vaulted hall, and large arched windows. Its history reaches back to 1664, when wine merchant Hans Georg Cron opened the original Pelikan cellar on Österlånggatan in Gamla Stan; the restaurant moved several times before Sara, Sweden’s General Restaurant Company, bought the Blekingegatan establishment in 1969 and restored the historic name. Pelikan is notable for preserving a working Swedish tavern tradition associated with Södermalm’s former hauliers and wholesalers, while its menu remains centered on regional comfort food rather than modern reinterpretations. It is open daily from 11:30 until 01:00, with weekday lunch served from 11:30 to 13:30; booking ahead is sensible for dinner and weekend tables.
