Tranan

Tranan is a classic Swedish restaurant and former beer café at Karlbergsvägen 14, directly beside Odenplan in Stockholm’s Vasastan district, postal code 113 27. Erik Lindén founded it in 1929 and ran it until 1959; his daughter Marie-Louise Öhrn managed it until 1983, when restaurateur PG Nilsson bought and renovated the premises, and Mac Donald Lundgren became owner in 2005. The menu combines Swedish home cooking with Swedish-French classics, including meatballs and fried herring with mashed potatoes, a dish served since the restaurant opened. Its basement originally operated as a fine-dining room with live cello, piano, and violin, later became a seed shop and furniture store, and returned to Tranan in the 1980s. The restaurant is open Monday–Thursday 11:30–22:00, Friday 11:30–23:00, Saturday 12:00–23:00, and Sunday 12:00–22:00; the bar stays open daily from 17:00 until 01:00, and reservations are sensible for Friday and Saturday evenings.
