Modernity

Modernity is a specialist design gallery and shopping destination at Sibyllegatan 6 in Östermalm, Stockholm, selling rare twentieth-century Scandinavian and international furniture, lighting, ceramics, glass, jewellery, and decorative objects. Scottish designer and collector Andrew Duncanson founded the business in 1998 after moving to Stockholm in 1996; he now runs it with business partner Isaac Pineus. The collection focuses particularly on post-war pieces from the 1920s to the 1960s, including work by Hans J. Wegner, Finn Juhl, Arne Jacobsen, Alvar Aalto, Axel Salto, Berndt Friberg, Tapio Wirkkala, and Timo Sarpaneva. Modernity is notable for museum-level provenance and quality, with pieces acquired by institutions including New York’s Museum of Modern Art and Cooper Hewitt, as well as Stockholm’s Nationalmuseum. The gallery is open Monday to Friday from noon to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Sunday is closed, and contacting the gallery ahead of time is sensible when seeking a particular designer or high-value piece.
